Sanpete County has begun the new year with a new emergency services director.

The County Commission appointed Gary Clayton, Manti, to the position. Seven people applied for the part-time job, and three finalists were interviewed by the commissioners.Clayton, who moved to Manti with his family in May, brings a background in law enforcement and emergency management to the position.

A native of Southern California, Clayton was a Los Angeles County deputy sheriff for seven years and then moved to Utah in 1972. He was a deputy in the Utah County Sheriff's Department until he retired in 1990 at the age of 50. In Utah County, Clayton served as commander of the detective division and commander of emergency services.
