Actor Paul Newman's celebrity foods business made a fortune last year, and he has donated $8 million of it to more than 400 charities worldwide. The amount is Newman's share of the profits from Newman's Own Co., which has raised nearly $36 million for charity by selling popcorn, salad dressing and other foods since its inception eight years ago. The recipient charities range from a one-room schoolhouse for the children of migrant workers to victims of floods, hurricanes, famines and other disasters. Newman's Own started with spaghetti sauce Newman made in his kitchen for friends and still is based in his hometown of Westport, Conn. It also sells lemonade, salsa and other sauces.
