After an opening ceremony that included a drill-team performance in the parking lot, more than 100 area residents toured the Magna Branch Library to see the expansion that nearly tripled its size.
The unexpectedly large crowd assembled for the noontime ceremonies had to be moved to make way for the performance by the Cyprus High School Spinnakers and jammed the library aisles soon after it was officially reopened. The decision to expand the community's existing library in leased space in the Arbor Park Shopping Center came after much debate. Some residents wanted the Salt Lake County Library District to build a free-standing library.
The site many of those residents preferred was in downtown Magna, which they felt would help revive the area. But library district officials have said that it is cheaper to operate an expanded library in the leased space.
The library, at 8339 W. 35th South, was expanded from 3,500 to about 10,000 square feet by knocking out a wall that separated it from a store. The cost of the project was about $90,000.
