To save money, the Utah Division of Motor Vehicles has switched to a three-decal registration system.

Beginning Jan. 1, vehicle owners renewing their registration received a sticker indicating the month and another sticker indicating the year of registration to place next to the county sticker. If the vehicle hasn't been registered yet or if the owner moves to another county, a new county sticker will also be necessary.

In subsequent renewals only the year sticker will be replaced.

"After the first year, the change will enable the State Tax Commission to save $8,000 annually in reduced inventory and printing costs," a State Tax Commission spokeswoman said.

Previously, a sticker indicating both the month and year of renewal was used along with a county sticker. The three stickers will fit horizontally in the left-hand corner of the license plate.
