Take a look at some of the overall records carried by the teams listed in this week's Deseret News Coaches Poll and . . . whoa, what's this? Four teams with records at or below .500? Are the rankings turning rank?

Three of those teams with lackluster records, in fact, are found in the 3A ranks, where some of the preseason state and league favorites are taking turns taking it on the chin - a la Ogden, Mountain Crest, Payson and others.Seems like the participating poll coaches are more impressed with what teams are doing lately - Jordan went 1-5 with a preseason that, in addition to the season-opener with Payson, looked like a who's who of 4A powerhouses with Bingham, Timpview, Bonneville, Hillcrest and Cottonwood. However, the Beetdiggers are the sole team with an unbeaten record (3-0) in Region 6.

Bountiful's 3-6 overall record includes a five-loss pre-holidays skid, as the Braves found out that winning the 3A state football crown has some drawbacks - like being forced to field a team and play its first game less than a week after the championship game at Rice Stadium. But Bountiful is currently righting itself of late, boasting a 2-1 Region 6 record.

And Ben Lomond followed a roller-coast ride of a preseason - a seemingly indiscriminant selection of wins and losses for a 3-5 mark - before back-to-back wins in Region 5 put the Scots at an even 5-5 mark.

The other sub-.500 team in this week's polls is defending 1A champion Panguitch. However, the Bobcats are 3-5 overall but are 3-1 in the Region 12 standings, in second place behind league-leading Piute.
