The Kickoff Classic, played annual at Giants Stadium here at the start of the college football season, may match Georgia Tech and Michigan, according to a published report.
The Yellow Jackets and the Wolverines are among five teams under consideration for the game, according to The Sunday Star-Ledger of Newark.Robert Mulcahy, chief of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, confirmed that the five schools were among the finalists, but said no decision has been made. An announcement is expected in about a week.
Georgia Tech, which capped an 11-0-1 season with a 45-21 victory over Nebraska in the Citrus Bowl, finished No. 1 in the UPI Coaches Poll, and No. 2 behind Colorado in The Associated Press Top 25.
Michigan wound up No. 7 in the AP poll after thrashing Mississippi 35-3 in the Gator Bowl.
The other teams being considered for the ninth Kickoff Classic are Penn State, Florida State and Miami, the paper said.
