Tamas Darnyi of Hungary sliced more than two seconds off his 400-meter individual medley world record Tuesday to retain his crown in the event at the 6th World Swimming Championships.
Darnyi clocked four minutes 12.36 seconds in cool, windy weather.The United States managed only one gold, that going to twins Karen and Sarah Josephson in the synchronized swimming duet final. The United States has managed merely two gold thus far after 15 events.
Olympic and Goodwill Games champion Anthony Nesty of Surinam won the men's 100-meter butterfly, ahead of 1984 Olympic gold medalist Michael Gross of Germany and Soviet Viacheslav Kulikov.
Gross led at 50 meters, but Nesty caught him in the final 10 meters.
