Convicted serial rapist Blaine Hogge Nelson has been sentenced to serve a minimum of 35 years in prison on his guilty pleas to five counts of aggravated sexual assault.

Fifth District Judge J. Philip Eves said the sentence will be served concurrently with the 30-year term Nelson received for four rapes in Ogden.Eves acknowledged that Nelson had cooperated with authorities in clearing up five rapes in Iron County between July and December 1987 but rejected Nelson's plea for leniency.

Nelson, an Ogden truck driver, questioned the severity of the term, which could have been a minimum of 25 years - five years for each count. Eves told Nelson, 33, that he had 30 days to appeal the sentence if he so wished.

Last month, during a hearing before Eves, Nelson pleaded guilty to the Cedar City sexual assaults. All the victims lived within a three-block radius of Southern Utah State College.
