Bo Schembechler apparently was the fall guy in the wake of the firestorm that greeted the firing of Detroit Tigers announcer Ernie Harwell.
Schembechler, the club's president, quietly took responsibility for firing the popular Harwell, who won't return after the coming season. But a report in Sunday's Detroit News says it was WJR general manager Jim Long, not Schembechler, who pulled the trigger on Harwell's 31-year career behind the Tigers microphone."I feel awful about what's happened to Bo," Long said. "I haven't been able to sleep because of it. I want it known that I was the one who did not want Ernie to come back and it was wrong of me not to say anything before now."
