University of Utah officials say B. Stanley Pons wasn't to be back in the classroom Monday.

Pons, a tenured chemistry professor at the U., was scheduled to start teaching a graduate-level chemistry class winter quarter. Nine students were enrolled."We are in the process of negotiating his relationship with the university," said John Morris, U. academic vice president. "The class is going to be canceled for today. We hope to have a resolution and some kind of public announcement on Wednesday."

Pons and Martin Fleischmann announced in March 1989 they had generated cold fusion through table-top experiments. Pons, who is working on experiments out of state, last fall asked for a sabbatical from teaching duties.

U. officials have been considering Pons' request, which they say came on short notice and wasn't budgeted.
