Iran's supreme religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told women Sunday that Western values of luxury and consumerism must be eliminated from Islamic society so that such problems as corruption and prostitution can be overcome.

Khamenei, in a speech to the Women's Cultural and Social Council at a meeting to mark the anniversary of the birth of the Prophet Mohammed's daughter Fatima, said:"Leading women toward luxuries, futile adornments and transforming them into commodities is a great tyranny and oppression that has caused women to neglect their ideals and objectives to attain perfection and distracts them with banal and meager matters."
