Chris Govedaris' centering pass from the left corner bounced off Holik's skate, just past the reach of Winnipeg goalie Bob Essensa and hit inside the right post 2:45 into the third period. At Uniondale, N.Y., Pat LaFontaine's breakaway goal at 9:03 of the third period broke a tie and the New York Islanders went on to a victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.

LaFontaine, blocking an offensive attempt by Terry Carkner at center ice, raced in over the blue line on right wing, cut toward the slot and decked Flyers goalie Ken Wregget for his 24th goal.
