Officials have identified a 17-year-old boy stabbed to death Monday as Martin Clements.
The boy's mother, Georgia Clements, 52, was listed in serious but stable condition Wednesday after suffering apparently self-inflicted stab wounds and swallowing insecticide.According to a Utah County attorney's office spokesman, Mrs. Clements had been treated for mental disorders about six months ago.
"There was no evidence of a struggle," Pleasant Grove Police Chief Michael Ferre said of Monday's events. "We think the boy may have been asleep when he was struck and stabbed."
Ferre speculated that in the afternoon, when Mrs. Clements realized she might not die from her stab wounds, she swallowed diazinon, an insecticide used to kill insects. He said officers found a half-empty cup of the poison in the house.
A daughter who shares the house was at work when the incident occurred. Police were summoned at 4:30 p.m. by an adult son who visited the family home, Ferre said.
The boy's father, Bryce Clements, a trucker, was located and told to fly home because of family problems. He reportedly got the news of his son's death and wife's injuries when he arrived Tuesday night.
