The Heisman Trophy already may be paying off for BYU.
The Los Angeles Times reported Friday that a top local high school quarterback has made a verbal commitment to attend BYU.Carson High quarterback John Walsh is expected to sign a national letter of intent with the Cougars Feb. 6.
A 6-foot-4 senior, Walsh set California single-season passing records this past season with 4,226 yards and 48 touchdowns. He led Carson to a 37-16 victory over Banning in the Los Angeles City championship game.
His efforts earned him the Times' Glenn Davis Award as Southern California's best high school football player.
Before choosing BYU, Walsh had reportedly narrowed his list of colleges to Miami, Florida State, USC and Washington.
It was reported earlier that Koy Detmer, Ty's brother and also a quarterback, was also leaning toward BYU. Koy Detmer still has one more year of high school, however.
