Some 670 students attending Orchard Elementary, 205 E. Center St., enjoyed an extra day of holiday vacation on Wednesday.

School was called off when efforts to thaw a main waterline from the street into the school proved unsuccessful."The problem was discovered about 3 p.m. yesterday (New Year's Day), and crews worked on it until about 9 p.m. without success," said principal Wayne Stanger. "We think the line will be thawed sometime today, and we'll be able to resume school on Thursday."

Stanger said it does not appear that plumbing inside the school has been damaged.

Orchard is part of the Davis County School District.
