At least 3,000 people were killed in Rangoon alone during five days of anti-government protests across Burma last week, diplomats said on Wednesday. The Rangoon-based diplomats contacted from Bangkok, Thailand, quoted hospital officials as saying "at least 3,000 people were killed in Rangoon" when troops fired on huge crowds of demonstrators seeking an end to the country's rigid one-party system. The diplomats said troops that moved into the city Tuesday were moved out again Wednesday in what appeared to be a decision not to confront expected new demonstrations.
