Rapists and drug traffickers who murder in New Hampsire face the death penalty under laws that took effect with the new year.

Murder in connection with a rape in the state had been categorized as first-degree murder and punishable by life in prison without parole.Under one law that went into effect Tuesday, the crime became capital murder and the penalty was increased to execution by lethal in-jection or hanging.

Murder committed during certain drug-trafficking offenses was also added to the list of crimes classified as capital crimes. The offenses include the manufacture or sale of cocaine, heroin, LSD and PCP over minimum amounts.
