Bloody riots by prisoners demanding freedom spread Wednesday to the Jessore Central Jail, where inmates and guards clashed with knives, iron bars and guns in a confrontation that left at least two prisoners dead.

The violence at Jessore, 100 miles southwest of Dhaka, prompted the government to order more than 70 other prisons nationwide to increase security in an attempt to prevent any further rioting.The wave of riots began Saturday at the Dhaka Central Jail and later spread to facilities in the cities of Commilla, Noakhali, Chittagong and Jessore. At least 12 prisoners have been killed and 350 others wounded in clashes.
