Loretta Hicken Mendenhall, age 89, loving mother and grandmother, of Richfield, Utah, passed away on Monday, Dec. 31, 1990, in Salt Lake City, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

She was born June 1, 1901, in Heber City, to Thomas and Mary Lovina McMullin Hicken. On December 20, 1920, she was married to Howard B. Mendenhall in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.They were the parents of four children: Lela Schultz, Salt Lake City; Gene Mendenhall, Richfield; Thomas B. Mendenhall (deceased); Mary Elaine Headlee, Farmington Hills, Michigan. She had 20 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Howard, in 1948.

For a number of years, she led the family business, Mendenhall's Clothing Store, in Richfield.

Loretta is survived by: brothers, Ben and Ward Hicken; sisters, Ora Nelson, Emma Kirkham and Nell O'Brien.

She bore the affliction of Alzheimer's Disease with a sweet, quiet dignity, and her eight years in a nursing facility were warmed with the love and affection of her care-givers and fellow patients. The family is deeply grateful for the loving care given by the staff of the Doxey Hatch Medical Center.

Services will be held at the Springer-Turner Funeral Home, Richfield, Thursday, Jan. 3, 1991, at 1 p.m. Friends may visit the mortuary two hours prior to the services. Interment, Richfield City Cemetery. The family requests no flowers, but that contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Research Foundation.
