At the stroke of midnight on Dec. 31, as decreed by the 1990 Legislature, Weber State College became Weber State University. Dinners, dances, music and triple-exposure photography of fireworks and a blue moon helped usher in the new name with the new year. Weber will continue the festivities on Jan. 11 when Paul H. Thompson is officially inaugurated as the university's president. The events in Ogden coincided with celebrations at Southern Utah State College, which became Southern Utah University. The two new universities boost the state's total to four universities out of nine public higher-education institutions. Thompson said that the change in name will not mean a change in mission at Weber. "We will not become a research university. We have a mission that was clearly defined two years ago. We are primarily an undergraduate teaching university. We are going to continue to focus on technology."
