Wasatch Academy, a private non-denominational secondary school located here, has applied to the Sanpete Ranger District for a special use permit that would enable it to convert the Snowland Ski Area to "an environmental classroom."

Snowland, several miles east of Fairview on Forest Service land, has been out of use for several years. It is owned by Jerry Nelson, Fairview, who developed the property several years ago, but found the operation unprofitable. The property includes a lodge and a downhill ski run.

Wasatch Academy is negotiating with Nelson on obtaining title to the property.

Academy officials say the lodge would be converted to daytime use in connection with land management, natural resources and physical science studies.

They proposed year-round activities would include a weather collection station, a conservatory, classroom instruction and cross-country ski training during the winter months. No new construction is planned.
