During the flu season, more than 4,000 children who think they have the flu will actually be diagnosed with diabetes.

"Flu symptoms are often very similar to those of diabetes: unusual thirst, nausea, rapid weight loss and frequent urination," says Ann Setzer of Boehringer Mannheim Corp. "Many times, the flu is the final stressor that causes diabetes to flare up in undiagnosed diabetics."Since the symptom similarities can be misleading, and sometimes fatal if not detected and treated properly, anyone who has these symptoms should see a doctor.
