Gunmen firing automatic rifles ambushed a riot-police vehicle in a black township of strife-torn Natal province, injuring eight officers, police said Monday.

Unknown attackers also fired five shots and threw a bomb, which failed to explode, at a municipal police station in a black settlement near the Cape town of Uitenhague, police said. No casualties resulted from the early Monday incident. The Natal ambush, in a narrow road near the Indian Ocean port city of Durban, took place around 11 p.m. Sunday, a police spokesman said.

It came one day after a gunman killed a policeman with a shotgun blast to the face in a township near the province's flashpoint Table Mountain area.
