Utah American Mothers Inc. will sponsor its annual vocal competition and reception Saturday, Feb. 2, in the Tivoli Gallery.

Applications for the competition must be received by Sunday, Jan. 20. They should include a tape of the contestant singing three classical selections, at least one an opera or oratorio aria, plus old Italian, German lieder or other art song - no pops or musical comedy.Each applicant must be a mother, under 40, and with at least one year's private vocal training. She may not hold a contractual agreement to sing that exceeds $1,000 in payment for the previous 12 months.

An entry fee of $5 must accompany each application, unless contestants are members of American Mothers. For forms and information contact Jean Madsen, 292-1691, 345 S. 1100 East, Bountiful UT 84010.

The winner of the contest will be announced Feb. 2 and will receive $100, plus a chance to perform at the state convention Thursday, Feb. 28. Her tape will be sent to national headquarters to compete for a national prize of $1,000.

American Mothers also sponsors competitions in visual arts, arts and crafts and literature. Last year, Utahns won nationally in art and sculpture, said Madsen. Contest chairwomen are:
