Two admitted assailants boarded a city bus and began passing out money they said they robbed from a foreigner, a newspaper reports.

"We mugged a `gringo' and we're loaded with cash," the Jornal do Brasil quoted the unidentified robbers as saying in a report Thursday. The muggers passed out 500-cruzeiro ($2.85) bills to the startled passengers and wished them a happy New Year.

They gave the changemaker on the bus 1,000 cruzeiros, explaining, "You lead a tough life, just like we do," the report said.
