Tom Coughlin, an NFL assistant coach with Philadelphia, Green Bay and the New York Giants since 1984, was named coach at Boston College, replacing ousted Jack Bicknell.

Coughlin, 44, who has coached receivers for the Giants for three seasons, was chosen by new BC athletic director Chet Gladchuk for a second tour of duty with the Eagles. Coughlin was an original member of Bicknell's staff in 1980.Coach Frank Beamer of Virginia Tech turned down an offer to replace Bicknell. Then coach Jimmye Laycock of William & Mary accepted an offer, but changed his mind less than 24 hours later.
