Beginning Tuesday, anyone who in a year writes three checks that bounce in Malaysia will not be allowed to have a bank account for six months.

Jaafar Hussein, Governor of Bank Negara (Central Bank), told reporters that just too many people have been issuing dud checks.Currently, anyone issuing bad checks is fined 100 ringgits ($37) per check.

"In a recent survey, the Association of Banks In Malaysia discovered that every month about 30,000 checks turn up that aren't worth the paper they are printed on, The New Straits Times in an editorial Tuesday.
