Maybe it doesn't seem like it should be a race, but the winner of the annual Diaper Derby to determine the first baby born in 1991 will cash in on a bundle of prizes.

The yearly contest is sponsored by the Deseret News and The Salt Lake Tribune with prizes donated by 52 local merchants who ran ads in both papers on Dec. 26.The winner will be the first baby born on Jan. 1, 1991, in Salt Lake County. The time of birth entered on the birth certificate by the attending physician along with the place of birth, weight, sex, name of baby, parent's name and address, will determine the winner.

Reporters from both newspapers will begin checking with the following hospitals early New Year's Day: University, LDS, Pioneer Valley, Cottonwood, St. Mark's,Holy Cross, Holy Cross Jordan Valley and Alta View.

If a baby is born at a place other than those listed, both newspapers must be notified before 7 a.m. on January 1, 1991, to be included in the final judging. The birth must be registered with the Salt Lake City-County Board of Health by the attending physician. Also, to eliminate any unfair advantage, babies born by Caesarean section will not be eligible for prizes.
