What a difference clouds can make in helping to moderate frigid temperatures like those Utah has experienced the past four days.
Much of Utah received more snow for a white Christmas as temperatures moderated greatly over the state.By 6 a.m. Christmas morning, about a half-inch to an inch of new snow had fallen in Provo, an inch at the Salt Lake International Airport and approximately an equal amount in many other areas.
The temperature was expected to reach a high of 14 degrees in Provo and Salt Lake City on Christmas Day and will drop to from 0 to 5 degrees above zero Tuesday night. Vernal had a minus-25 and Tooele had a minus-5 reading Tuesday morning.
The chance of measurable snow was 20 percent Tuesday, increasing to 30 percent Wednesday. The forecast calls for continued cold weather but with slowly moderating temperatures, said Bill Cope, a weather service specialist at the Salt Lake office of the National Weather Service.
