Salt Lake's Joel Rosenberg leaves this week for New Zealand, where he will conduct 20 performances of Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" with the New Zealand Opera Company in Auckland.

The performances, involving a number of American singers, will take place as part of the company's regular season Sept. 3-28.Rosenberg, 39, is music director of the Bountiful Symphony and former assistant conductor of the New Mexico Symphony. A former student of Franco Ferrara, he has guest conducted for Ballet West and, in its holiday presentations of "Amahl and the Night Visitors," Utah Opera.

Rosenberg has served as principal violist at the Blossom Festival under Pierre Boulez. Performing on that instrument, he has just released his second recording of LDS hymns, available locally.
