Unidentified assassins shot and killed a top aide to the vice mayor and his bodyguard Monday as they cruised along a highway outside the U.S. Clark Air Base in a jeep, police said.

Capt. Vicente Dizon, chief of the Police Investigation Division, identified those slain as Archimedes Simblulan, 46, and his bodyguard, Ramon Garcia, 26, who were gunned down by two men riding a motorcycle along McArthur Highway.Simbulan is a top aide of Edgardo Pamintuan, vice mayor of the liberty city of Angeles, 50 miles north of Manila. Pamintuan de-nounced the killings as "politically motivated."

Dizon said a motorcyle with two men aboard sped past the victims' vehicle and opened fire with .45-caliber automatic handguns. Both men were shot in the head and died on the spot, doctors said.
