A woman who said she had a bomb in a package tried to hijack an Aeroflot jetliner to the United States but was arrested, the Tass news agency said Saturday.

The Tu-154 jet was making a refueling stop at Volgograd during a flight Thursday from Rostov, 745 miles south of Moscow, to Nizhnevartovsk in eastern Siberia when the woman, who boarded at Rostov, demanded to be flown to any U.S. city, Tass said. The woman, who was sitting in the back of the plane, showed a package to the flight crew and said it was a bomb.

"The chief pilot quickly agreed on an operation with airport services to capture the hijacker," Tass said. "The operation was perfectly carried out by the airport security police."
