Police Saturday awaited test results for clues in the fatal car crash that killed Chicago Bears rookie defensive tackle Fred Washington, a man with a ready smile and a sharp wit.

Washington, 23, a native of Denison, Texas, who lived in Lake Bluff and a female companion, Petra Stoll, 22, Palatine, died on impact early Friday when his car struck a tree in a suburb north of Chicago. Police said Washington apparently was driving at high speed.Deputy Police Chief Gary Wieczorek said Saturday police found neither alcohol nor drugs inside the car. He said authorities had inventoried a beer can found outside the wrecked auto.

"But we've not been able to put that with the accident. There's a lot of debris around there. It's a heavily traveled area," Wieczorek said.
