The chairman of the Utah Board of Parks and Recreation has won the State Service Award presented by the National Recreation and Park Association.

The award was given to Dr. Wendell H. McGarry at the National Congress for Parks and Recreation, held in Phoenix, in October. It is conferred yearly to a parks board member who exhibits outstanding performance in state service.Jerry A. Miller, director of the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation - which the board governs - nominated McGarry. He said McGarry "feels the division should develop and improve facilities to their highest potential consistent with state resources available."

Among McGarry's contributions, according to Miller, are:

- Sponsoring a legislative golf tournament at Palisade State Park.

- Setting aside a day each year when park board members are introduced to legislators.

- Spending much of his own time and money, outside his chairmanship duties, to support state park concerns.
