Travis Walbeck of Sigurd captured first place in the National 4-H Turkey Barbecue contest in Louisville, Ky.

Walbeck, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Blake Walbeck, won the chance to compete for national honors after winning a contest in Sevier County and defeating contestants in the state contest.The youth presented a 10-minute poultry marketing demonstration and prepared and barbecued turkey breasts in the national contest. He also won a $500 savings bond, a barbecue grill, a National Poultry contest pin, a gold watch with the 4-H emblem and a plaque.

Two other southern Utah 4-H youths also placed in other categories in the national contest. Lois Bench, Moroni, Sanpete County, won fifth in the Beef Ambassador contest, and Apryll Jorgensen, Castle Dale, Emery County, won fourth in the Egg Preparation Contest.
