The president of the LDS Church's Thailand Mission has been arrested and accused of insulting Buddhist monks, police said Wednesday.

Police Capt. Visuit Chatchaidet said Anan Eldredge, 45, had been released on bail after being charged with printing a newspaper without a license and insulting monks. The Religious Affairs Department in this overwhelmingly Buddhist country said it put the matter into police hands after receiving complaints about an article written by Eldredge in a church publication.

The article allegedly said Thai monks chanted prayers without knowing their meaning and that this was foolish.

Officials of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Thailand refused comment on the arrest.
