A major Colombian drug figure surrendered to government authorities to avoid extradition to the United States where he faces drug trafficking charges, his family said.

Fabio Ochoa, 33, was a high-ranking member of Colombia's infamous Medellin drug cartel, headed by former Colombian legislator Pablo Escobar Gaviria. Ochoa's brothers, Jorge and Juan David, also belong to the drug cartel."I have turned myself in as a gesture that I hope will lead to the betterment of Colombia," Ochoa said in a statement Tuesday.
