A Chinese physicist who returned to his homeland to seek justice for a jailed dissident was given safe passage back to the United States on Wednesday, saying family pressures forced him to cut his mission short.

Ge Xun, a 31-year-old doctoral candidate in physics at Texas A&M University, used the term "frustrating" to describe his quest for information about the case against democracy activist Wang Juntao."I'm not satisfied," Ge said in a seedy hotel hours before his departure. "My friend is being treated unfairly."

Ge returned to China Dec. 10 to demand an "open and fair" trial for Wang, a magazine editor charged with sedition and spreading counterrevolutionary propaganda for activities during the 1989 protests.
