Britain's Prince Charles, a harsh critic of modern architecture, told French Culture Minister Jack Lang he admired columns installed at the Palais Royal in Paris in 1986.

Charles found the columns by Daniel Buren "very beautiful and very strong," Lang said after he met with the prince. The contemporary-style columns have generated lively praise and criticism since their installation. The Culture Ministry is at the Palais Royal.

"The prince's taste is more toward preservation of the tradition, but he has a certain receptivity to the modern," Lang said.
