Once again, the top seeds in the men's open division of the Love 5 Intermountain Sectional at the Sports Mall moved on with no major disturbances, while in the women's division things were turned topsy-turvy.

The only break in the men's seeds came when No. 5 Drew Sweet swapped places with No. 4 Brian Monson. In a long, tiring match, Sweet beat Monson in the only three-setter played in the two divisions, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Both Sweet and Monson are former players for the University of Utah.Top-seeded Peter Mallett, a teaching pro at the Canyon Racquet Club, beat Chris Entzel, a current player on the Utah squad, 7-5, 6-2; No. 2 Scott Warner of Nevada beat another Utah player, Brandon Bowyer, 6-3, 6-1; and No. 3 David Harkness, the No. 1 player for BYU, beat Chris Spackman, 6-4, 6-2.

In the women's division, Wendy Compton, who came from England to play on the Weber State women's team, upset No. 1 seeded Carol Bailey of Steamboat Springs, Colo., 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Compton is unseeded in this event.

Another upset was posted on the other side of the bracket. No. 4 Debbie Robb, a former BYU player who tried the pro circuit for several years, beat No. 2 seeded Karen Ryan, a teaching pro from Colorado, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Finals in both the men's and women's open will be played Saturday at the Sports Mall. The women's final will begin at 10 a.m., with the men's to follow. Admissioin is free.
