A Kearns man serving a life sentence for the throat-slashing death of a 14-year-old girl was hospitalized Friday for facial fractures, blood clots and eye injuries.
Raymond Joseph Malin, 25, was in critical condition Friday at the University of Utah Hospital following surgery, a nursing supervisor said.Malin pleaded guilty last March to the 1987 death of Jana Dawn Hoercherl, whose body was found behind a telephone switching building in Kearns.
Prison spokesman Juan Benavidez said an inmate hollered that Malin was down in his cell block at the prison's maximum security section.
Malin was taken by air ambulance to the University Health Sciences Center about 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Benevidez said.
Malin was found alone in the cell. He and other prisoners had been on "out-of-cell" time before he was found.
