Airmen at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey push a pallet of fruit onto a loader with pallets of mail to be shipped to U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia. Neither rain nor sleet nor sand has stopped Operation Desert Mail, an around-the-clock operation that handles 70 percent of all military mail earmarked for troops in Operation Desert Shield and has shipped up to 250 tons in a single day - the equivalent of 2.6 pounds for every U.S. soldier. "In terms of volume, this is probably the biggest airlift mail operation since Vietnam," said Capt. Richard Trembley. "We just never realized that much mail could be generated."
