David Klingler and Darren Lewis, two of college football's offensive stars in 1990, headed the United Press International all-Southwest Conference football team announced Saturday.
Klingler threw for 4,424 yards and an NCAA record 54 touchdowns. He led the country in total offense and guided the Cougars to a 10-1 record. Klingler was also named offensive player of the year in the SWC.Texas defensive back Stanley Richard was selected the league's defensive player of the year, David McWilliams was named coach of the year for guiding the Longhorns to the league title and freshman running back Butch Hadnot was chosen newcomer of the year.
Lewis became the SWC's all-time leading career rusher and was third in the country this season with 1,691 yards. Lewis was joined in the offensive backfield by surprising Rice running back Trevor Cobb, who became the first 1,000-yard rusher in his school's history.
