The U.S. team of Matt Laue and Dan O'Meara defeated five other teams Saturday at the Nordic Combined International Challenge.

The competition was comprised of 70-meter Nordic jumping and a 1-kilometer cross-country ski race. Teams from the Soviet Union, Finland, Canada, and Switzerland also competed.Laue and O'Meara finished second in the jumping, with 193.4 points, behind the U.S. team of 16-year-old Ryan Heckman and Todd Wilson, which earned 194.65 points.

The competition, virtually unknown in the U.S., is one of the largest spectator events staged in Northern Europe and is considered one of the oldest sports in skiing. The first competitions were held in Norway in the early 1800s.
