An armored truck guard was fatally shot Friday during a payroll robbery at JFK International Airport by two armed men wearing American Airlines uniforms, authorities said.

The 47-year-old victim was shot as he emerged from the truck outside the American Airlines hangar with a bag containing $65,000, which the gunmen grabbed before fleeing in a blue car, officials said. The shooting occurred at 5:06 a.m. after the armored truck pulled into a parking lot near the hangar. The gunmen were described only as two white males.

Police did not disclose the victim's name pending notification of relatives and would not say whether he put up any resistance.

Port Authority spokesman Tom Middlemiss said a baseball cap containing an American Airlines logo was found at the scene, along with one spent shotgun cartridge and two spent shell casings from a .38-caliber revolver.

But, he said, a total of up to eight rounds were fired at a right-side window of the truck at a second guard who was in the passenger seat of the truck and escaped injury.

The victim was shot in the back and died about an hour later in Jamaica Hospital.
