The dollar rose slightly Friday amid nervousness over the Persian Gulf crisis, but trading was relatively quiet.

The U.S. currency rose to 1.4820 German marks, compared with 1.4785 marks Thursday. It also rose to 133.15 Japanese yen from 132.25.Although war jitters boosted the dollar, typically a safe haven in times of crisis, the U.S. unit was undermined by other factors, including government reports underlining the weak state of the economy.
