One man is in critical condition and another is dead after separate traffic accidents late Wednesday and early Thursday.

Robert S. Craft, 25, remained in critical condition Friday morning at LDS Hospital after his car crashed into a tree.Moments after skidding across a snow-slicked street in South Salt Lake and smashing into a car waiting at a traffic signal late Wednesday night, Craft's vehicle crashed into a tree a few blocks from the initial collision.

The first collision occurred about 11:30 p.m. at 3300 and State Street. That accident was minor, said South Salt Lake Police Officer Tracy Tingey.

Tingey said the hit-and-run victim chased the other car but lost him at about 2900 S. 500 East. When Salt Lake police received a report that someone had rammed a sedan head-on into a large tree a block and a half north of the first wreck, "we put two and two together," Tingey said.

The victim in the first crash identified Craft's car as the one that hit him in South Salt Lake, police said.

A second man, whom authorities are still trying to identify, was killed about 4:30 a.m. Thursday while he was attempting to cross I-15 on foot.

Utah Highway Patrol investigators said the victim was trying to cross the southbound lanes near the North Temple overpass when he was struck by a car traveling south on the freeway. No further details were available.
