The Provo City Library has been awarded a $17,644 grant from the state of Utah in its "Thriving for Excellence" category.

Library Director Howard Downey announced the State Development Grant to members of the Library Board at the Wednesday board meeting. The award requires signatures of city and library officials before the money is available for the library. The Provo Library received a somewhat smaller award in the same category last year, Downey said. Last year's money was used to purchase books.

The money can be used as the library board and administrators see fit, said Downey, within some limitations. The money can't be used for general maintenance of the library or grounds, and the money can't be used as matching funds for other grants.
