It's official. The first Deseret News Coaches Poll of the 1990-91 prep basketball season is out, and the first-week favorites are 4A Cottonwood, 3A Spanish Fork, 2A North Sanpete and the 1A duo of Green River and Parowan.

The overall records listed for the teams in the poll are through Tuesday's games - Wednesday's results are not included in the records. The season's first Coaches Poll is not to be confused with a preseason straw poll published earlier this week, which had Cottonwood, Ogden, North Sanpete and Panguitch as its preseason favorites. The straw poll was conducted in conjunction with a preseason questionnaire, which was completed and returned by approximately 67 percent of the 100-plus head coaches.

North Sanpete is the only team earning dual top-honors in the two polls published this week. It is also the only team earning all five first-place votes - a maximum of 25 points - in the respective ballotings.

The weekly Deseret News Coaches Poll is determined by five coaches from each of the state's four classification levels, with all 13 regions represented by at least one coach. Participating coaches vote for five teams, with point values given to ranked teams.

On the heels of the inaugural Coaches Poll come a couple of Friday matchups featuring a pair of ranked foes. In Region 12 play, defending 1A state champion Panguitch visits 1A runner-up Parowan in a rematch of last year's title contest - Parowan is ranked No. 1 with Green River in this week's 1A poll, while still-winless Panguitch is No. 4.

In another 1A pairing of ranked opponents, Green River visits No. 5 and undefeated Tabiona. Both are Region 13 members, but each resides in a different division - this game only counts in the overall standings.

Two of the state's largest leagues - 4A's Region 3 and 3A's Region 6 - get under way Friday, with full four-game slates in each of two eight-team leagues. Defending 4A titlist Bingham visits first-year Hunter in a featured Region 3 game, while 1989-90 Region 6 champion Judge Memorial begins its league title defense as the new-look, new-face Bulldogs travel to Tooele.

And the opening-season matchup of interest in 2A's Region 9 has South Summit traveling to top-ranked North Sanpete.

While some half-dozen regions either start or continue league play this weekend, the rest of the state's teams will be playing preseason non-region games. Two of the top contests have No. 2 Davis playing host to Brighton in a 4A battle, while a 4A-3A crossover contest has Orem playing at Payson.

Region 1 - the northern 4A league - begins its competition Dec. 21, while the rest of the 4A and 3A leagues - Regions 2, 4, 5, 7 and 8 - start league play after the new year.
