Dogs will be among the stars of this year's annual National Ram Show and Sale at the Salt Palace Aug. 14-18.
Nancy McNeal, Logan, who is organizing the annual Scottish Border Collie Championship Trials to be held during the show, said more than two dozen top champions from throughout the United States will compete for $1,500 in prizes and trophies at Jeremy Ranch Aug. 14-15.She said the dogs come originally from the border area between Scotland and England, and contests for the breed have been held for more than 100 years in Great Britain and for nearly three decades in America.
"The dogs herd five sheep at a time in an area about the size of a football field through two gates and into a pen, then out of the pen into a 20-foot-diameter circle and then take three sheep out of the circle and keep them from joining the other two."
The dogs work quietly, following their handlers' voice commands and whistles.
"Scottish Border Collies, which weigh about 25 pounds, are best known for their hypnotic eyes and quiet ways."
She said an auction of Scottish Border Collies will be held Aug. 16 at the Salt Palace. Some are expected to bring $5,000 or more, and many should bring $1,000 to $2,000. The dogs to be auctioned will be on display and, their skills will be demonstrated from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 15 at Jeremy Ranch.
Admission to the championship trials, which are scheduled from 1 to 6 p.m. Aug. 14 and from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 15, will be $3 for adults and $1.50 for children. Proceeds will be used to pay for transporting sheep to the contest, to pay judging fees and to buy trophies, Neal said.
More than 1,000 of the nation's finest purebred rams and ewes will be auctioned at the National Ram Sale, sponsored by the National Wood Growers Association and scheduled for 5 p.m. Aug. 17 and 9 a.m. Aug. 18.
The five-day event, which is expected to attract more than 500 sheep producers and industry leaders from throughout the United States, will include a Sheep Exposition and Trade Show at the Salt Palace, a National Wool Show and a wool clothing style show.
